It's been a long time since my last post and the main reason is because I have a new job and I've been pretty busy and excited about it that I rarely sit and work at home. Also, my computer is pretty much done. It's reached it's life expectancy and I need to replace it. Nevertheless, I have had some weekends where I sit out in the sunshine and draw. Here are a couple of sketches inspired by places that I've been to.

Tiene un buen desde la ultima vez que escribi algo aqui y la razon principal es porque tengo un nuevo trabajo y he estado bastante ocupada, y mi trabajo es muy emocionante y es ahora raro que llegue a mi casa a trabajar en algo mas. Ademas, mi computadora como quien dice ya valio. Creo que ha llegado el tiempo de reemplazarla. A pesar de todo, he tenido algunos fines de semana cuando me siento afuera en el sol y dibujo. Aqui hay un par de sketches inspirados por lugares a los que he visitado.

Every year, my nephew receives cards at school for Valentine's day. And every year, I make one for him and send it even if I'm not there. This is the card I made for him this year. He is 8 years old, so I avoided red and pink as much as I could.

To Whomever Visits My Blog:
Sorry for being away for a while. I have to have a different schedule now, no more sketching at coffee shops (unfortunately). I am also in the middle of moving and that has been taking some of my time.
Jen and I decided to start a weekly project where we post posters on random topics/things. One of the weeks the topic was sandwiches and here is a series of brainstorming ideas I had (none of them was used), but I thought it 'd be nice to share some of these in here. The final posters are in our prossass blog. The purpose of it is to have fun drawing and thinking of random ideas without restrictions while searching for what it is that we like doing as designers.

Perdon por haber desaparecido por un rato. Ahora tengo otro horario y ya no hago tantas sesiones de bocetos en cafeterias (lamentablemente). Tambien estoy en medio de mi mudanza y eso me ha estado tomando tiempo. Jen y yo decidimos empezar un proyecto semanal de hacer posters con temas al azar. Uno que hemos ya hecho fue de sandwiches y esta es una serie de imagenes que obtuve pensando en ideas (de las cuales no use ninguna), pero pense que deberia compartirlas aqui. Los posters finales estan en nuestro blog prossass. El proposito de esto es de divertirnos dibujando y pensando ideas sin restricciones mientras encontramos que es lo que nos gusta hacer como diseñadoras.

It's february and I'm having a hard time getting work done. I seem to have all these ideas but nothing gets done. Not being able to find a job is probably what's causing it, but today I decided that I had to do something, big or small, I had to get something on paper or computer or whatever. And here it is.. It isn't anything super exciting, but hopefully this is the beginning of a more productive time. Anyway, here it is a photograph I took a few weeks ago along with some words that keep coming up in my head...

Es febrero y me ha estado costando trabajo hacer cosas. Parece que tengo todas estas ideas pero nada que puedo llevarlas a cabo. No tener trabajo es seguro lo que lo provoca, pero hoy decidí que tenía que hacer algo, grande o pequeño, pero tenía que hacer algo en papel o en la compu o como sea. Y aquí está. No es muy interesante, pero espero que esto sea el principio de un tiempo de producción. Bueno, aqui está, es una foto que tomé hace unas semanas junto con unas palabras que se siguen repitiendo en mi cabeza...

While I was home, I went to the beach and played around some sand dunes. I am so lucky to be able to live in two countries and enjoy so much of the diversity of nature, people and cultures. I always miss home, but when I go back, I enjoy it very much because I don't spend much time there anymore. I am glad to be back in Canada, a country full of possibilities and which has become my new home. 2010 will be a big year for me. I will be working towards becoming a resident of Canada, and well, after almost 7 years here, it is the least I could do. In the meantime, I am in job search mode, but also I will start working on some design projects at home and hopefully continue with my career development this way.

Mientras estuve en mi casa, fui a la playa y estuvimos jugado por las dunas. Soy realmente afortunada de poder vivir en dos paises y disfrutar tanto de la diversidad de la naturaleza, gente y la cultura. Siempre extraño mi casa, y por eso, cada que voy, disfruto mas el estar ahi porque ya casi no paso tiempo alla. Me alegra poder estar de regreso en Canadá, un país lleno de posibilidades y el cual se ha convertido en mi nuevo hogar. El 2010 sera un gran año para mi. Estaré trabajando para convertirme en residente de Canadá, y bueno, después de 7 años aqui, es lo menos que puedo hacer. Por el momento, estoy buscando chamba, pero tambien estaré trabajando en varios diseños en casa y asi seguir echandole ganas a mi carrera.

My internship at Vanmag is over. I left Vancouver a day after we finished the Visitors' Guide to go home for holidays. It's always great to come visit, see the fam and have a break from cold Canadian winters, even though Vancouver isn't so cold. Like always, I'm not ready to go back to Canada, but I am ready to continue working, and drawing, and designing and doing all that good stuff I don't do much of at home. And all of that will start next week, when I return to Van and get going with my career again. As usual, I've been taking photos and these are some of the ones I liked.

Mis practicas en la revista de Vancouver se terminó. Me fui de Vancouver el dia despues de que terminamos la Guia para Visitantes que hicimos para irme a mi casa de vacaciones. Está chido poder ir a visitar, ver la familia y tener un descanso de los inviernos fríos de Canada, aunque Vancouver no está tan frio. Como siempre, no estoy lista para regresar a Canada, pero ya estoy lista para seguir trabajando, y dibujar, y diseñar y haciendo todo esas cosas que podría hacer que no hago mucho en mi casa. I have been interning at Vancouver Magazine (www.vanmag.com) for 2 months now and I'm enjoying it a fair bit. It's great to see the process and work it takes to produce an issue every month. For one of the issues, I did an icon to represent Christmas lights (here is an image of just a few of the icons I did). I am also currently working on a curriculum for the Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition together with Jen. It's a new project that will help both of us start building up our real work portfolio and working as a team at the same time. I will have more things to post in the next few months.

He estado teninendo practicas en la Revista de Vancouver (www.vanmag.com) ya por 2 meses y lo estoy disfrutando bastante. Es muy interesante ver el proceso y trabajo que requiere el crear una edicion de la revista cada mes. Para una de las ediciones, hice un icono representando Luces Navidenas (aqui esta una imagen de solo algunos de los iconos que hice). Por el momento, tambien estoy trabajando en disenar un curriculum para una Asociacion de Cyclismo en Vancouver con Jen. Es un nuevo proyecto que espero nos ayude a ambas a empezar un portafolio de trabajos de verdad y asi mismo comenzar nuestro proposito de trabajar en equipo. En los proximos meses, tendremos mas cosas que postear.

some collaborative work

Although I haven't done a lot this summer other than enjoying the outdoor life in Vancouver, I have worked on a small project together with Whitney. It is a children's book that we entered in an international competition for a mexican publisher called Fondo de Cultura Económica. The contest was to promote art and literature to children and teenagers. The only restriction to it was that it had to be written in Spanish. For our book, we came up with an idea of a collection of images based on the letter Ñ, which is a unique letter in the Spanish language. I did the cover and designed the book and Whitney did the illustrations. Here is the cover and some spreads...

Aunque no he hecho mucho este verano mas que disfrutar de la vida en Vancouver, he trabajado en un proyecto pequeño junto con Whitney. Es un libro para niños al que entramos por medio de un concurso internacional creado por una imprenta mexicana, el Fondo de Cultura Económica. El concurso es para promover la creación literaria y plástica de niños y jóvenes. La única restricción era que tenía que estar escrito en Español. Para nuestro libro, se nos ocurrió la idea de hacer una colección de imagenes basadas en la letra Ñ, ya que es única para el idioma Español. Yo hice la portada y diseñé el libro y Whitney hizo las ilustraciones. Aquí está la portada y algunos pliegos. So, here I am, a few weeks in Van already and still no job. I have the internship at Van magazine in september, but until then I don't have much going on. So, I came up with this idea of using this blog and being more experimental while having more fun creating stuff. I seem to take more pictures than actually drawing and designing things. I'm not a photographer, but maybe I could use these images and make something out of them somehow. I was at the fireworks in English Bay a couple of days ago and here are a couple of pictures from that beautiful night..

I moved back to BC and I'm enjoying it a lot. While I am looking for jobs, I've also been catching up with friends here in Van and going to the beach to sketch and enjoy some well deserved vitamin D. Also, I will be an intern at Vancouver Magazine starting in September but in the meantime, I am looking for a daytime job. It seems pretty slow for now but I'm hoping to get something soon. I am also trying to keep myself busy with personal projects, one of which I'm collaborating with a friend of mine. Here's a small sketch from today's visit to English Bay.

After grad and all that, I received my Canadian permit and I'm almost ready to work, except no job yet. I've applied for a few jobs and I have only scored an opportunity to show my work to someone but haven't had an interview yet. In the meantime, while I'm unemployed, I decided to come visit my family in Mexico since I don't know when I'll be back again after I (hopefully) get a full time job. Today I decided to take random photographs of the things and places I see around on the streets of my hometown and it was quite fun. so it's been a while since I posted something. But I am all done school now and hopefully this will be a way to keep me busy while producing personal work and writing more posts. So ya, I'm all done school, officially a Visual Communications Design graduate and excited for the new stuff to come. I will be moving to Vancouver at the end of june and I'm very excited about it. So, I am posting here my business cards. The idea behind it started because when people meet me for the first time (only in Canada) they cannot pronounce my name, especially if they see it written down. Therefore, my business card plays with the idea of reading my name phonetically. Here it is...

so I've had insomnia for the last few days and can't get enough sleep anymore, even when exhausted. I don't know how my body is handling it, but at least it is staying strong. Being insomniac, although terrible and I hate it, has been good for working wise and reading. I read about an hour every night before going to bed and also, I have been working on past projects just for fun.. Here's my newer version of Plant A Tree. I used painted tape, and I really like the textural feel to it.

I was working on a school project for illustration class and I really like the idea of drawing typography but giving it character at the same time. They are pro-environment images on contributing to cool the planet by doing small things like riding bikes, planting trees and recycling. Here are some images from the last few pieces of work I did in school. The first one is the logo I did for WP Puppet Theatre for a project called Puppets on the Go. I also did a brochure but I'm only showing the development of the logo.

The next one is part of some spreads for a book I designed for my Information Design class. The book was about Che Guevara and the ironic use of his image in popular culture.The last piece are some annual report illustrations for McKay's Ice Cream. This was probably the project I enjoyed the most doing.

It was a long semester with lots of things going on in school. We're all done and I'm already enjoying my holidays at home. I'm glad I got the opportunity to leave the cold, canadian winter to come to warm mexico and enjoy it with my family and friends. Lots of things are happening to me lately; 1> I have a job now. It's at a soccer camp and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun. 2> I will be hopefully getting my driver's license soon and maybe get a car. and 3> My 2 oldest bros recently moved to Calgary and are now living with me. (Let me tell you that one of them is a Chef and since he came, he's being cooking for us and it's absolutely delicious). I can't ask for anything else right now. Life is treating me really well and I'm just loving it. In terms of design work or art, I've been lacking a bit, but I promise I'll start getting on that first thing tomorrow morning. It's the middle of June and I feel like I have accomplished very little with my art and personal work since school was over. My 3 weeks at home/Mexico was a great success. I miss it already but it's good to be back to Calgary to get some things going here. To keep this short, I'd like to show you some of my favorite pictures I took while I was in Mexico. I'm not a photographer, but I enjoy playing around with my new camera.
